Frederik Andersen takes Stanley Cup to Legoland in Denmark

It’s that time of year when the Stanley Cup champions get to bask in their glory and spend one day with the most prized trophy in pro sports. So what did one of the newest members of the Edmonton Oilers do to celebrate the highlight of their career?

He went to Legoland.

Frederik Andersen got his day with Lord Stanley on Wednesday in his native Denmark, enjoying a quiet celebration to feel like a kid again, then a large party in his hometown of Herning. He couldn’t help himself, snapping several pictures with some of the lifelike, massive, and miniature Lego creations alike at the park with his family.

Andersen is a self-professed Lego fan and over the years has featured drawings of characters on his goalie masks.

After the trip through the theme park, the former Carolina Hurricanes netminder travelled to Herning, where he was greeted on stage by hundreds of fans.

He signed autographs, took pictures, and allowed his Danish fans to come look up close at the Stanley Cup, which is somewhat of a rarity in hockey history.

“We were working towards just being really confident and comfortable in the way we play,” said Andersen on the Cup victory, after signing with the Oilers. “That really was probably the biggest reason that got us to the top.”

Andersen is part of an exclusive club with this Stanley Cup victory, being just one of three Danes to ever be crowed champions. In fact, one of them is teammate Nikolaj Ehlers. The Cup trailblazer was countryman Lars Eller as part of the 2018 Washington Capitals, who brought the Stanley Cup to Denmark for the first time in the trophy’s storied history.

With two Danes as champs, that made the Stanley Cup trips a little easier to plan. On Thursday, Ehlers rode in a Lamborghini with the Cup in his hometown of Aalborg, Denmark.

The 38-year-old Andersen has had quite the summer. Just days prior, Andersen and his wife got married.
