The Vegas Golden Knights could be without Nic Roy in the coming days after the NHL’s Department of Player Safety has called for a hearing with the forward.
It’s due to a vicious cross-check Roy landed to the face of Edmonton Oilers winger Trent Frederic in Game 2 of the teams second-round series Thursday.

The cross-check in question happened five and a half minutes into the overtime frame when Roy and Frederic were battling for a puck, which popped in the air. As it did, the two turned to face each other, and Roy loaded a cross-check, delivering it square in Frederic’s face.
Roy was assessed a five-minute major for cross-checking and game misconduct, ending his night. Frederic would return after getting some repairs.

While some called for Oilers winger Viktor Arvidsson to have a hearing of his own for a trip on Golden Knights defenceman Brayden McNabb, sending him crashing hard into the boards and favouring his left arm as he left the game, the league didn’t feel it was necessary.
Upset after the game, Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy slammed the officials for not calling a penalty on the play.
“Listen, Gord (Dwyer) is looking at it. He blew it, he missed the call. I don’t know what else to say,” Cassidy said. “It’s a can-opener trip, it’s a dangerous play, it’s all those things. But it didn’t get called so you got to keep playing.”
Winger Mark Stone echo’d that sentiment.
“(It’s) pretty clear it’s a penalty,” Stone told reporters after the game. “(Arvidsson’s) stick is between McNabb’s legs, he sends him head-first into the boards. Pretty clear-cut penalty in my eyes, and I think everybody’s eyes, right? But it’s hockey, you don’t always get the calls, but unfortunately now we might be down a D-man. We’ll see tomorrow. It’s a dirty play and we don’t get the call.”
The Oilers, meanwhile, would score the game-winning goal minutes later with Connor McDavid setting up Leon Draisaitl.
A potential suspension for Roy wouldn’t mark the first time supplemental discipline was handed out in a playoff series between the two teams.
When they met in the 2023 playoffs, tempers flared late in Game 4 when Alex Pietrangelo was kicked out of the game for a two-handed slash on Draisaitl. Evander Kane caught Pietrangelo in an awkward spot not long after, ending he and Jonathan Marchessault’s night. Annd in the final minute of the game, Oilers defenceman Darnell Nurse found Golden Knights defnceman Nic Hague, dropping the mitts.
Pietrangelo was suspended one game for the slash, while Nurse was also issued an automatic one game suspension for his fight.
Game 3 of this series between the two sides returns to Edmonton Saturday night with the Oilers carrying a 2-0 lead.
