The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired the rights to defenseman John Carlson from the Anaheim Ducks per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The Ducks have received defense prospect Kyle Masters and pick #162 in Saturday’s sixth-round in return. There is no pre-arranged deal in place between Carolina and Carlson per Chris Johnston of The Athletic. Instead, the Hurricanes will buy a few days to negotiate with the veteran defender one-on-one before he hits free agency on July 1st.
Carlson could find one of his best chances at winning another Stanley Cup with the reigning champions. Carolina took home the 2025-26 title on the back of dominant performances from their blue line, including K’Andre Miller and Jaccob Slavin leading the pack. Even still, the Hurricanes’ defense lacked depth scoring since Brent Burns‘ move to the Colorado Avalanche last summer. Those marks were meant to be replaced by rookie Alexander Nikishin – but with Nikishin now on the trade block, Carolina will pivot towards a more surefire impact.
Carlson totaled 60 points in 72 games last season – split between 46 points in 55 games with the Washington Capitals and 14 points in 16 games with Anaheim. The performance was yet another encouraging sign of longevity from the 36 year old after he posted back-to-back 50-point seasons in 2023-24 and 2024-25. Carlson has long been a major offensive defenseman. He surpassed 70 poitns twice in his career, including as recent as the 2021-22 campaign. His play-driving style was also a cornerstone of Washington’s run to the 2018 Stanley Cup, a year where Carlson posted 68 points in the regular season and 20 points in 24 playoff games.
The Hurricanes blue line will be instantly upgraded – even beyond its Cup-winning heights – if they can add Carlson to the fold. He could immediately step into a top-pair and power-play role, bumping Jalen Chatfield and Sean Walker down the lineup. But with only $11MM in projected cap space, per PuckPedia, the Hurricanes may have to choose between Carlson or pending-RFA Nikishin. The result of a weekend of negotiations could spell out Nikishin’s chances at playing for a new club next season.
Anaheim will likely leave Masters unqualified, opening the door for him to explore free agency this summer. That will leave their late-round pick – used on centerman Noah Kosick – as the kickback from three months of Carlson in the lineup. The Ducks traded a 2026 first-round pick – used on center Oliver Suvanto – and 2027 third-round pick to the Washington Capitals to pry away Carlson in March. To their credit, Kosick will offer intriguing upside, after standing out as a high-speed puck-mover all season long. He will need to build out his physical frame and two-way game – but could target Anaheim’s pro ranks down the line.
