Insider delivers bombshell update on Jeremy Swayman contract talks

Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins are in a frustrating contract negotiation process that seems to be dragging on forever at this point.

Overall, it has been reported that Swayman wants $10 million per year and is hoping for an eight-year deal. However, there are other reports that the Bruins do not want to give him that kind of length. In fact, some feel as though the Bruins may not actually trust Swayman all that much and this is why they are having so many hang-ups about him.

In a recent episode of Early Trading with Pierre LeBrun, it was revealed that the two sides are still very far apart. Moreover, he reported that the deadline appears to be opening night. LeBrun also noted that as it stands, the Bruins are, indeed, interested in a long-term deal. Although they know that Swayman does not have the same leverage as an Igor Shesterkin.

'There's ongoing dialogue. I checked in on this again on Tuesday and I was told it's status quo and they're still not there,' LeBrun said. 'It gives me the sense that, even despite the pressure of the situation, that their real deadline is opening night as opposed to the start of camp last week. Both sides will keep going here.

'The key thing is that Swayman is still very focused on getting an eight-year deal. That's still the No. 1 priority for him, and the Bruins are looking at a long-term deal as well. But, you can't have the [New York Rangers goaltender Igor] Shesterkin discussion without having Swayman tied into it in the sense that they are different negotiations. Swayman, in terms of the collective bargaining agreement, isn't at the same leverage point because he won't be a UFA at the end of the year. So, Shesterkin has the higher leverage point.

'...Just because all these goalies [across the league] are signing for whatever they signed for the last couple years, Swayman can't find a way to push through. I think we're seeing that in his negotiations with the Bruins, so it's a fascinating one.'

These next few weeks will be interesting, to say the least. If Swayman doesn't have a deal by the first game of the regular season, the team may be in real trouble. Swayman knows what he wants and he is determined to get it. You have to respect that kind of thinking.
