The Stanley Cup Playoffs are a grind, and just about every player involved is gutting it out, battling through an ailment or two on a nightly basis.
That said, some injuries require more caution than others, one of those being concussions, which makes a recent report about the possibility that Evan Bouchard suffered one in Game 1 of the Edmonton Oilers’ first-round series against the Anaheim Ducks rather concerning.
Insider Frank Seravalli shared what he’s heard regarding a head injury Bouchard is believed to have sustained in Round 1 during an appearance on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer on Monday.
“Correct me if I’m wrong, and maybe you won’t be able to. I think Bouchard might have had a concussion in the playoffs… belted is one way of saying it, but yes, that’s what I was told. I believe that to be factually accurate,”
The 26-year-old Bouchard finished the postseason with seven points (one goal, six assists) in six games after racking up a career-high 95 points (21 goals, 74 assists) in 82 games played during the regular season.
It’s unclear exactly when Bouchard may have gotten concussed, though he was on the receiving end of several big hits in Game 1, including one from Cutter Gauthier that sent him hard face-first into the glass.
Bouchard, of course, didn’t end up missing any time, which raises eyebrows around the hockey world about how he was allowed to continue playing through such a serious injury.
Nobody involved with the Oilers has commented on the matter at this point, though it will certainly be something to monitor moving forward. Bouchard appears to be past it now, however, as he’s currently in Switzerland preparing to represent Team Canada at the World Hockey Championships, officially beginning on May 15.
