Islanders add longtime Bruins executive to front office

The New York Islanders are adding an experienced voice to their front office, officially hiring Evan Gold as assistant general manager and GM of the newly-relocated Hamilton Hammers, the Isles’ American Hockey League affiliate.

Gold spent the last 11 seasons with the Boston Bruins after joining the franchise in 2015. His contract with the B’s ended on August 1.

“Evan brings a rare combination of experience, intelligence, and results to our Hockey Operations department,” Islanders general manager Mathieu Darche said in the official release. “Over the past several years, he has excelled in nearly every facet of building a successful franchise at the NHL and AHL levels — from contract negotiations and cap management to leading the Providence Bruins to the best record in the AHL this past season.

“His background, combined with his legal and business acumen, makes him an outstanding fit for our department as we continue building a team that competes on the island and in Hamilton.”

Gold will join a group of AGM’s that also features Chris Lamoriello, Ryan Bowness and Steve Pellegrini. Per the release, he will be involved in “contract negotiations, contract strategy, scouting, salary cap management and more.”

A sought-after managerial free agent, Gold was reportedly considered for multiple GM roles this summer, including with the Vancouver Canucks before the franchise eventually elevated Ryan Johnson to the role.

The 46-year-old graduated from McGill University with a law degree in 2015 and joined the Bruins as Director of Legal Affairs for Hockey Operations shortly after. He has been the general manager of the AHL’s Providence Bruins since 2023, and helped the club finish with the best record in the league in 2025-26.

He’ll now bring his talents to Hamilton and Long Island, joining the Hammers after the franchise was relocated from Bridgeport. One of his first big tasks should be assisting in contract negotiations with young phenom and reigning Calder Trophy winner Matthew Schaefer.
