After a long wait, the news that Chicago Blackhawks fans have been waiting to hear has arrived. Roman Kantserov has put pen to paper on his Entry-Level Contract (ELC). Kantserov’s KHL contract was terminated earlier this month, laying the ground work for the signing.

What It Means: Roman Kantserov

When Roman Kantserov was drafted in the second round of the 2023 NHL entry draft, the choice had some risk to it. Kantserov was productive in Russia’s junior league, the MHL. In only 45 games, Kantserov had 54 points. However, the “Russian Factor” was prevalent with Kantserov. At the time of his draft, it was known that he would be playing for his hometown team, Metallurg Magnitogorsk.  And there was a possibility he wouldn’t sign.

However, these worries were quickly laid to rest, and Roman played three years for his childhood club. In those three seasons, Kantserov excelled. Year by year, Kantserov improved. His rookie season in the KHL saw him tally 13 points in 28 playoff games en route to a Gagarin Cup (equivalent to the Stanley Cup).

This season, however, saw “Romario” burst onto the scene. The 5-foot-9 forward broke the U-21 record for most points in a season with an impressive 64 in 63 games. The next closest was Carolina Hurricanes defender Alexander Nikishin, who had 55 points. Kantserov also broke the U-21 goals record with 35, passing NHL superstar Kirill Kaprizov’s 30.

For Kantserov, he now gets to prove himself on the biggest stage possible, the National Hockey League. As we get closer to the season, we will learn more about Roman’s utilization, but he will likely start in Chicago’s young top six.

What It Means: Chicago Blackhawks

After the unfortunate events of the 2026 NHL draft lottery, the Chicago Blackhawks are hoping for one of their current prospects to surpass their potential. Out of everyone in the system, Roman Kantserov is the likely candidate.

With the hopes of jumping Vancouver for the first overall pick or even staying at two, Chicago fell to four. Now the selection appears to be Caleb Malhorta or a defenseman—neither aids Connor Bedard. Kantserov does. With his IQ-driven game and ability to see the ice, Kantserov will take pressure off Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar, or Anton Frondell, depending on how the lineups shake out.

With a strong resemblance to Mats Zuccarello and his game, Kantserov can be a long-time contributor to top-end teams and talents for the foreseeable future.
