Jets’ Jonathan Toews Squashes Trade Deadline Deal, Addresses Future

Don’t expect veteran forward Jonathan Toews to be traded at this season’s NHL Trade Deadline. He’s got a full no-move clause in his deal and he has no intention of waiving it, according to comments he made in a recent interview.

“I wouldn’t consider going anywhere,” Jonathan Toews told The Athletic during an interview Monday. He added that despite the Jets brutal record this season and despite them likely not making the playoffs, “I want to keep playing for this team.”

Toews thinks the group is close. This season was a one-off. He added:

“I don’t even know that we’re not a playoff team. Even throughout our 11-game winless streak, there were so many nights where we were inches away from scoring a tying goal or a winning goal or we give one up late, losing in overtime. There were so many situations where all of the little things that could go wrong did … We’re going to find a way to make them go right.”

In other words, he believes in this group, even though their record indicates this is not going to be their year.

Toews Not Leaving Jets, Returning Next Season?

What’s interesting about the comments is that Toews is not under contract for next season. He signed a one-year, $2 million playoff-bonus-heavy deal. This hints that he’s looking to sign an extension and return to the NHL next season.

“I’m obviously thankful for the opportunity that the Jets organization and coaching staff have given me to be able to play in the NHL again. It was an adjustment period this year, but I want to keep playing for this team.”

So, if Toews isn’t willing to accept a trade, that means the Jets will be looking at selling off other assets. Ates writes that Winnipeg could move pending free agents like Luke Schenn, Colin Miller or Gustav Nyquist. He added, “Logan Stanley indicated to Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Free Press that he hopes to re-sign with Winnipeg, but he could also be an asset of interest.”
