The Winnipeg Jets announced on Wednesday that they have placed defenseman Haydn Fleury on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 6.

Fleury was injured on a concerning play on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights when he crashed into the boards back-first. Fleury was taken off the ice on a stretcher and spent the night in a hospital for further evaluation.

Head coach Scott Arniel told reporters including TSN’s Danielle Bain that Fleury was able to return home from the hospital on Wednesday with a broken nose and bruised back. Arniel also said that Fleury will continue to be evaluated for further concussion symptoms.

Fleury, the No. 7 overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, has caught on as a depth defenseman having spent time with the Hurricanes, Anaheim, Seattle and Tampa Bay before landing with the Jets. He has 44 career points in 324 regular season appearances, and he has yet to record a point in his 17 games played this year.

In a corresponding move, the Jets also announced that they have recalled forward Danny Zhilkin from their AHL affiliate Manitoba Moose. Zhilkin has not yet made his debut at the NHL level, and he has 14 points in 30 games played for the Moose this season.

Winnipeg is in the midst of a nightmarish first half of the season after advancing to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs a season ago. The Jets are last place in the Central Division by a six-point margin, and they are 10 points back of the Western Conference’s second wild card spot.

Winnipeg is off on Wednesday before getting to work on a stretch of three games in four nights on home ice starting on Thursday against Edmonton. Los Angeles rolls into town on Friday night, and New Jersey will follow on Sunday.
