Jets to sign Jonathan Toews to one-year deal

TSN insider Pierre LeBrun first reported the news Friday morning, saying the two sides had an agreement, but the contract could not be registered with the league until July 1.

The news comes after Toews signalled to the league that he was ready to return to professional hockey following a two-year absence from the game. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reported that three teams held interest in Toews – Winnipeg, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche – but it was Toews’ hometown Jets that he decided to sign with.

Toews, 37, was one of the league’s best two-way forwards for more than a decade, scoring 372 goals and 511 assists for 883 points in 1,067 games, all with the Chicago Blackhawks. He also scored 45 goals and 74 assists for 119 points in 137 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

He captained the team to three Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013 and 2015, winning the Conn Smythe in 2010 as a 22-year-old. He also won the Selke Trophy in 2013 and the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award in 2015. Toews also appeared in six All-Star Games.

Internationally, Toews has represented Canada in a number of events, including the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics, winning gold both times, as well as the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, the 2007 and 2008 World Championships, as well as the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Championships.
