Kris Knoblauch Drops Bombshell Comment on Goalie Decision for Game 4 After Brutal Loss to Panthers

Following Stuart Skinner getting pulled in a brutal Game 3 loss to the Panthers, Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch admitted he isn't sure who to start for Game 4.

Has every goal Stuart Skinner given up been his fault? No, but they still all add up. With the Oilers down 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Final and the Florida Panthers sniffing around, Edmonton is quickly becoming less of a contender.

The question now: Is it time to switch up the goalie for Game 4 on Thursday? Head coach Kris Knoblauch replaced Skinner in the third period of Monday's 6-1 defeat after giving up five goals on 35 shots.

Knoblauch is unable to reveal who he wants in the crease for Game 4

Knoblauch's comments afterward gave little reassurance as to which goalie would be used in Game 4.

'We haven't made a decision on goaltending,' Knoblauch said post-game. 'Stu, I don't think, had much chance on many of those goals.

'I think collectively, goaltender, defence, all our forwards, we all have to be better.'

That brings his total to 13 goals given up on 97 shots this series, a .866 save percentage. In other words: not good enough, particularly with a top-heavy offense and championship ambitions.

In comes Calvin Pickard. He saved seven of eight shots in relief, as he did when he relieved Skinner in the first round against L.A. The Oilers mounted a comeback then, and Pickard won six consecutive starts before injury gave the crease back to Skinner.

To his credit, Skinner recovered, going 6-2 with three shutouts before experiencing turbulence again in this Final.

Now, after back-to-back losses for the first time during the playoffs, the coaching staff is confronted with a familiar conundrum: ride with Skinner or attempt another spark with Pickard.

Two days to make that decision and one season hanging in the balance.
