The more time passes, the more it becomes clear that Kyle Connor won’t be leaving the Jets. The forward is set to sign an eight-year contract (effective next summer) at close to $12 million per year. With

Elliotte Friedman, in a piece on the subject, reported that the Jets have not only agreed to go where the club has never gone in terms of salary, but that a no-trade clause is also in the contract, as are big bonuses early in the deal. The club refused to do this before, but they’re adapting. And for a player like him, the Jets had no choice.

But the fact remains that $12M a year for a guy who has only two 80+ point seasons in his career and has never reached the 100-point mark is a good amount.
We can’t compare him to Connor McDavid, who took a discount, but… it’s a reminder that prices are going up.Connor, who isn’t a center, still deserves his contract, since he’s still quite a player and prices are going up. But it alsoreminds us that, had Nick Suzuki not signed a long-term contract with Marc Bergevin, he too would be eligible for full autonomy in the summer of 2026. And as a top center, he’d be asking for quite a bit of money. It’s a good reminder to Kent Hughes that he needs to take advantage of the fact that his top line (and other guys, like Kaiden Guhle and Noah Dobson) are signed long-term to win while they’re signed on reasonable contract terms. In my opinion, the GM already knows this. And I think that while he knows he has to be patient with his players (which is not wrong), Hughes also figures that getting off to a good start this season is important.

– Happy birthday to
Canadiens defenseman Alexandre Carrier, who turns 29 today. #Habs had a 28-15-8 record after acquiring him from the Nashville Predators last Dec. 18 in exchange for defenseman Justin Barron. @mtlgazette photo by Allen McInnis pic.twitter.com/cVxu42HYW6
