A new report from Elite Prospects has Jonathan Toews signing a hometown bargain deal with the Winnipeg Jets within the next couple of weeks.
Jonathan Toews may be coming home. A June 7 report by 'Elite Prospects' reveals that the veteran forward, and former Stanley Cup champion, is considering a deal with the Winnipeg Jets, his hometown team, and at a bargain price, too.
'The three-time Stanley Cup winner could be on his way home to play for his hometown Jets.'- Elite Prospects report
Toews, who is a three-time Stanley Cup and Conn Smythe Trophy champion, is from Manitoba. While teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs have been said to be interested, Winnipeg could be the favorite for him.
The Jets are more than just a sentimental choice because they're a contender as well. They took home the Presidents' Trophy this year and are looking to have a second-straight deep playoff push next season.
If he stays, Toews would not be a top-six center anymore. His place would be for the Jets to fit him into their second six, where his leadership and playoff experience is what would really stand out.
Given that he can still produce in a diminished role, and combined with championship pedigree, this is why he's such an appealing depth acquisition for GM Kevin Cheveldayoff.
One exciting tidbit in the report is that Toews seems eager enough to take a discount offer. That might make him the ideal candidate for a Jets team that needs to bolster its roster without spending too much.
In the meantime, the Maple Leafs, who are also in the running, can count on Toews to change the losing culture there, but there is no suggestion he's taking Toronto seriously. Winnipeg looks more likely to be his destination of choice.
