The Toronto Maple Leafs will be missing a key forward to start the 2025-26 season.

While speaking with reporters in Toronto Wednesday, Leafs general manager John Chayka said forward Max Domi failed his physical and will be out indefinitely.

The comes a week after Leafs Morning Take host Nick Alberga reported Domi was expected to miss training camp and the start of the regular season. In May, the team announced he would be out indefinitely due to complications arising from an offseason injury.

Domi has two years remaining on a four-year, $15-million deal with an average annual value of $3.75 million he signed ahead of the 2024-25 campaign.

Domi, 31, is coming off a 2025-26 season where he scored 12 goals and added 24 assists for 36 points and 95 penalty minutes in 80 games. In three seasons with the Leafs, he’s posted 29 goals and 87 assists for 116 points and 289 penalty minutes.

Through 11 NHL seasons, Domi has 150 goals and 336 assists for 486 points and 801 penalty minutes in 815 career regular-season games with the Leafs, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes.

Domi has also played in 63 career Stanley Cup Playoff games, where he’s scored 10 goals and recorded 23 assists for 33 points.

Taken by the Coyotes with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Domi played four seasons of junior hockey with the Ontario Hockey League’s London Knights, where he posted 126 goals and 205 assists for 331 points in 244 career regular-season games.

Domi’s most productive junior campaign came in 2014-15, where he scored 32 goals and added 70 assists for 102 points in just 57 regular-season games.

In 58 career OHL playoff games, Domi had 24 goals and 36 assists for 60 points. He helped the Knights win two OHL Championships in 2012 and 2013, as well as a Memorial Cup championship in 2013.
