The Toronto Maple Leafs made a pair of roster moves Wednesday. Moves that, under normal circumstances, would barely raise an eyebrow. But the timing of those moves matters. Most notably, the dollar figure involved. It has the hockey world buzzing over the possibility that Toronto could be positioning itself for a blockbuster acquisition.
According to PuckPedia, the Leafs placed both Max Domi ($3.75M) and Dakota Joshua ($3.25M) on long-term injured reserve. Moves that free up a combined $7 million in additional cap space under LTIR rules.
That figure is significant. It falls almost exactly in line with the salary it would take to land Carolina Hurricanes RFA defenseman Alexander Nikishin. He has reportedly requested a trade and has yet to report to training camp.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Hurricanes defenseman is seeking a five-year contract. He is also looking for an average annual value of $9 million. It would represent a significant investment in a defenseman who has only one full NHL season under his belt. However, Nikishin’s camp appears to believe his rookie campaign was only the beginning of what he can become at the NHL level.
The 24-year-old Russian blue-liner recorded 33 points in his first NHL season. Enough to establish himself as an important part of Carolina’s defense corps while continuing to adjust to the pace and physical demands of the league. However, his usage could be one of the biggest factors in the contract discussions.
Nikishin averaged 18 minutes and 11 seconds per game during the season. A number that suggests there could still be considerably more responsibility ahead for the young defenseman. His representatives are believed to be placing value not only on what Nikishin accomplished in his first season, but also on what he could produce if given a larger role and more opportunities to contribute in all situations.
Not everyone is convinced the asking price is justified, and perhaps Toronto could manage to convince him to take a lower rate if they can land him. Carolina is reportedly seeking the equivalent of two first-round picks in any trade, a steep price for a player whose production, while solid, does not yet place him alongside the league’s top-tier defenders like Quinn Hughes or Cale Makar.
Still, the Leafs clearly have the cap flexibility now, and Toronto’s need for defensive upgrades is no secret. Fans quickly connected the dots on social media, with some noting the freed-up money is perfect for adding a defenseman and urging the front office to get a deal done.
Whether the Leafs are genuinely pursuing Nikishin or simply managing their roster health situation remains unconfirmed. The gap between what Carolina wants in return and what any acquiring team would be comfortable paying could prolong the situation for a few weeks.
The cap room is obviously there. The trade request is on the table. Toronto has positioned itself as one of the most logical landing spots if the Hurricanes eventually decide to move their disgruntled defenseman. It’s definitely a situation to keep an eye on.
