Logan Cooley was drafted in 2022, third overall by the Arizona Coyotes. He decided to forego his college playing days and, after one season with the University of Minnesota, signed a three-year entry-level deal worth $950,000 per year.
It was a wise decision for his personal growth as a hockey player, as well as for adding him to an NHL roster at the time.
Reviewing Cooley’s NHL career thus far shows that he has increased his productivity year over year. During his initial campaign in the NHL, he revealed that he belonged. He registered 20 goals and 24 assists while participating in all 82 games in Arizona. He then followed that up during the 2024-25 season with 25 goals and 40 assists in 75 games. When a player increases their production by 32 percent, people start to notice.
Cooley hasn’t slowed down going into this new season with 13 goals and 8 assists in 23 contests. He seems to be a streaky scorer. He recorded seven goals and four assists in his first ten games. Then, as sometimes happens to many players, Cooley experienced a dry spell, scoring one goal and three assists in his next ten games. He suddenly caught on fire in his 23rd game on November 24th. He accumulated four goals and one assist to lead the Utah Mammoth to an impressive 5-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights.
Not only was this Cooley’s second hat-trick of the season, but he also became the first Utah player to ever score four goals in a game. Granted, two of his tallies were into an empty net, but he earned both goals by his tenacious puck battles to gain possession and eventually score. It’s that kind of performance that may separate him from other NHL players if he continues his stellar play.
General manager Bill Armstrong knew what he had in the talented forward and signed him to an eight-year contract worth $80 million. With Cooley, 21, in the fold, the Mammoth have a terrific young player on their roster long-term. He has an electric connection with Dylan Guenther, who was also inked to an eight-year deal worth $57.14 million starting this season. Watching these two excellent players on the same line is a thing of beauty. They click on the ice, knowing where the other is at all times, and make some spectacular plays.
With the emergence of Logan Cooley, the Mammoth have a great shot at being a playoff team this season. Typically, at the time of American Thanksgiving, teams in a playoff spot have an excellent chance of finishing there by the end of the season. As of this writing, Utah is in a wild-card spot tied with the Vegas team with 27 points. The Las Vegas Golden Knights hold the top wild-card position by playing one less game.
The Mammoth has a squad filled with young, talented players accompanied by a mixture of veterans to lead the way. Their next ten games include a six-game road trip, which will be a grind. If they can come out of that with a few wins, they will still be in the postseason hunt.
If Cooley continues his scoring prowess, that shouldn’t be a problem. They are getting some renewed goaltending play from Karel Vejmelka. They will need his skills to get to the playoffs, and he is showing that he is capable of leading his team down the stretch.
The Mammoth’s Cooley will be an integral part of this team for years to come. The future success of the club isn’t completely on Cooley’s shoulders, but he will do all he can to help get Utah to the playoffs. You know what they say… anything can happen in the playoffs. Getting there is often the most challenging thing.
Cooley is a battler and doesn’t shy away from physical play. You’ll see him in the corners in the middle of a puck battle all the time. He knows you can’t score without the puck, and he is adept at gaining the biscuit on his stick. He then knows what to do with it.
NHL superstar in the making.
