Mammoth lose 4-1 to open preseason: Postgame notes

The Utah Mammoth opened preseason last night with a disappointing 4-1 loss on the road. While preseason is pretty meaningless, there were some interesting things to note after the loss.

Notes after Utah's loss in Colorado

Utah won 70% of the faceoffs

Vincent Trocheck, whom Utah added over the offseason to help in many areas, won six of the seven faceoffs he played in. This is nice to see, given how important faceoffs become in the regular season. Utah. Despite the loss, others like Gabe Smith, Kevin Rooney, and Caleb Desnoyers won some faceoffs as well, which was great to see for Utah.

Sebastian Cossa was good, Michael Hrabal was not

Sebastian Cossa looked good in his two periods of action, saving 11 shots and allowing only one goal. Cossa also showed good poise on the power play, with the only goal allowed being a 2-1 in which Cossa didn't really stand a chance.

Hrabal, meanwhile, a prospect hoping to surprise people in 2026-27, allowed two goals on only five shots faced. Utah was tied with Colorado heading into the third period, but allowed three goals and suffered a 4-1 loss. Hrabal definitely needs to be better in the future.

Utah had the edge in shots on goal and hits

Despite the loss, Utah had 24 shots on goal to Colorado's 17. Plus, the Mammoth had 28 hits to Colorado's 17.

Of course, the Mammoth want to see this translate into wins in the future, but it's good to see Utah dominate in those facets of the game.

Next, Utah visits the Los Angeles Kings tomorrow night. Utah has only two more preseason games left before the beginning of the season on Oct. 1st.
