The Utah Mammoth have re-signed defenseman Nick DeSimone to a two-year, $1MM AAV contract extension.

As part of the team’s official announcement of the signing, Utah GM Bill Armstrong said:

Nick brings a veteran presence to our blue line and plays a very reliable game. He skates well, moves the puck effectively, and is the consummate professional. We are excited to have him on our roster.

DeSimone, who is repped by Allan Walsh of Octagon Hockey, has bounced around the NHL and AHL over his nearly decade-long professional hockey career, but seems to have now found a home with the Mammoth.

The former Union College blueliner, 31, arrived in Utah in January of last year, as the Mammoth claimed him off of waivers from the New Jersey Devils. The versatile right-shot defenseman has skated in a total of 60 NHL games across the last two seasons, and set a career-high with 40 games played in 2025-26.

Despite his relative lack of experience at the NHL level before arriving in Utah, DeSimone managed to earn the trust of head coach Andre Tourigny as his team’s seventh defenseman. He averaged 14:12 time on ice per game last season, producing eight points in his 40 contests.

For DeSimone, this contract represents the most significant payday he’s received in his professional career thus far. This is DeSimone’s first contract with more than just one year of term since signing his deal with Calgary in 2022, and just his second deal making above the league-minimum salary at the NHL level.

While DeSimone’s grip on an NHL roster spot is inherently more shaky given his lack of experience and status as a depth defenseman, this deal should help him remain Utah’s preferred seventh defenseman for the next two years.
