The Utah Mammoth announced on X (formerly Twitter) that they have signed Nick Schmaltz to an eight-year contract extension. The contract carries a cap hit of $8.0 million per season. This is a significant raise for Schmaltz; his current contract has a cap hit of $5.85 million per season.

The extension contains trade protection that decreases over time, starting with a full no-movement clause and ending with an eight-team no-trade clause. This gives the Mammoth more flexibility to make changes later in the contract if needed. The contract will take effect next season and conclude in 2034, when Schmaltz is 38.
The Mammoth currently sit firmly in the first wild card position in the Western Conference. At the trade deadline, Utah acquired Mackenzie Weegar in exchange for several draft picks to bolster the team’s defensive depth. They have a six-point lead on the Seattle Kraken and the Los Angeles Kings, who are tied for the last wild-card position. They also sit well behind the Minnesota Wild, who are third in the Central Division. Utah looks set to make the postseason for the first time in franchise history.
Schmaltz, 30, has been a critical factor in the Mammoth’s success this season. Currently, he is playing on the first line with Clayton Keller and Dylan Guenther. He has 59 points (24 goals, 35 assists) in 65 games this season. The 24 goals are a career high for Schmaltz, and he is on pace to set a career high in points as well.
Due to Schmaltz’s great two-way ability, Utah uses him in all situations. He plays on both the power play and the penalty kill. Having these types of players is a very important factor in building a contending team. Schmaltz is the kind of player that a coach knows they can rely on in the final moments of the game to protect a lead or push for a goal.
