Maple Leafs’ Artur Akhtyamov will make 1st NHL start vs. Islanders

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Artur Akhtyamov will make his first NHL start Thursday against the New York Islanders, head coach Craig Berube confirmed.

Akhtyamov will take the place of the injured Anthony Stolarz, who sustained a lower-body ailment during Wednesday’s 4-0 loss to the Washington Capitals. Stolarz was ruled out during the first intermission and Berube was unsure if the veteran goaltender will play during the remaining four games. The 32-year-old left Wednesday’s contest after making a pad save early in the first period. Berube did not provide a timeline, nor did he specify the nature of Stolarz’s injury post-game.

“He’s played well now. He’s a competitor. He’s really got fast reflexes. He’s competitive as hell, man. I really like the kid a lot,” Berube said of Akhtyamov on Wednesday evening.

Akhtyamov made his NHL debut on December 13 against the Edmonton Oilers, entering the game in relief of Dennis Hildeby, making five saves. He signed a three-year extension worth $900,000 annually with the Maple Leafs in March, and he’s rapidly rising through the organizational ranks. Akhtyamov was also named to the 2026 AHL All-Star Classic. It’s entirely possible that the Maple Leafs promote Akhtyamov to the NHL on a full-time basis for the 2026-27 campaign.

Luke Haymes and William Villeneuve will make their NHL debuts for the Maple Leafs, Berube confirmed. Haymes has recorded 17 goals and 32 points with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies this season. The 22-year-old could be auditioning for a larger role ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Villeneuve recorded three goals and 29 points with the Marlies this year, and could also be fighting for a real chance at the NHL level. It will be compelling to see how Berube manages the roster, with several Marlies called up to play out the stretch.

Dakota Joshua and Brandon Carlo are both ruled out of Thursday’s game due to injuries. Bo Groulx will be sent down to the Marlies for roster management purposes.
