Maple Leafs: Could Anthony Stolarz Trade Be Near?

Earlier this week, the Toronto Maple Leafs assigned goaltender Anthony Stolarz to their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, on a conditioning stint. This is certainly notable news, as the 32-year-old goalie has not played for the Maple Leafs since their Nov. 11 contest against the Boston Bruins due to an upper-body injury.

While speaking to reporters, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube shared that there is no timeline on Stolarz’s conditioning loan. While this is the case, it is still good that Stolarz has recovered enough to get back on the ice with this conditioning stint.

Yet, at the same time, the Maple Leafs now have a decision to make when it comes to their goaltending. Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby have been working well as a tandem, and it has created some speculation about Stolarz being a potential trade candidate. Could Toronto actually trade Stolarz?

Maple Leafs’ Stolarz Named as Trade Candidate

Recently, Stolarz was among the players featured on Nick Kypreos’ most recent trade board for Sportsnet. The NHL insider argued that the Maple Leafs could explore Stolarz’s trade market near the deadline if he performs well once he returns for Toronto.

Yet, Stolarz has struggled this season, as evidenced by his .884 save percentage and 3.51 goals-against average in 13 appearances. However, when noting that he led the NHL with a .925 save percentage in 2023-24 with the Florida Panthers and a .926 save percentage this past season with Toronto, there is no question that he could generate interest from teams that are looking for help between the pipes.

Maple Leafs Would Be Wise to Keep Stolarz

While Stolarz is understandably generating some chatter as a trade candidate, the Maple Leafs would be wise to keep him around. When playing at his best, the Edison, New Jersey native is a very good goaltender, and it would sting if he regained his top form with another club. Furthermore, with Toronto aiming to be a playoff team, it would be smart for them to have as much insurance between the pipes as possible.

What’s also important to note is that Hildeby is waiver-exempt, so the Maple Leafs can send him down to the Marlies’ roster without needing to worry about another team claiming him. With this, the Maple Leafs don’t need to rush a Stolarz right now, but time will tell what happens with the 6-foot-6 goaltender.
