The Toronto Maple Leafs are coming off a horrible 2025-26 season that saw the team fall to a 32-36-14 record and miss the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in a decade.
Injuries to their key players, a shuffled roster following Mitch Marner's exit last summer, and steadily inconsistent production were issues all year long, forcing the franchise to make major changes.
New general manager John Chayka replaced Brad Treliving, and he has already begun the search for a new head coach. Once the right candidate is found, the franchise will proceed to reshape the roster via both the NHL draft, where Toronto holds the No. 1 overall pick—free agency and the trade market.
Regarding that last avenue of adding talent and following the news about Max Domi's post-surgery complications, a new report has linked Toronto to a high-end external solution in a potential trade.
According to The New York Post’s Mollie Walker , the Maple Leafs have reached out to the New York Rangers about a possible move involving center Vincent Trocheck.
“Toronto has reached out about Trocheck in the wake of Max Domi’s back surgery complications,” Walker reported. “Domi is out indefinitely. Depending on whether Toronto is on Trocheck’s no-trade list and the Pittsburgh native is willing to go to Canada, it could be a fit. Toronto [could be] in the market for a second-line center.”
Walker linked Toronto's interest in Trocheck to Domi's situation. The 31-year-old underwent offseason surgery and, due to complications, has now been ruled out indefinitely, leaving uncertainty around his availability moving forward.

Trocheck, 32, could slot into the Leafs lineup smoothly behind Auston Matthews as the second-line center for the upcoming season. He recorded 16 goals and 53 points in 67 games last season and is under contract through the 2029 season at a $5.625 million cap hit.
The cost of acquisition, however, might give the Maple Leafs pause and rule them out of contention to land Trocheck. According to Walker, the Rangers are seeking “at minimum, a first-round pick, a roster player and a prospect.”
For now, the Leafs seem to be more focused on their coaching search than anything else, with a leading candidate emerging from their last round of interviews.
