Now that forward Dakota Joshua has returned to the active roster for the Toronto Maple Leafs from a core muscle injury, Benoit-Olivier “Bo” Groulx has lost his roster spot. According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Maple Leafs have placed Groulx on waivers this afternoon.
This was a likely scenario for Groulx even before Joshua returned from injury. The depth forward has appeared in less than half of Toronto’s games this season. His last appearance came on October 28th against the Seattle Kraken. Before that, Groulx hadn’t played since October 17th against the New York Islanders.
With all due respect to Groulx, he’s been largely unnoticeable in the games he has played. He’s gone scoreless in seven contests with a +1 rating, averaging 8:03 of ice time per game. He has delivered 12 hits in that time, but hasn’t brought the same energy as he did after last year’s trade deadline. After the Maple Leafs sold off a few pieces last season, they recalled Groulx for the rest of the campaign. He scored three goals and five points in 13 games with a +4 rating.
If he clears waivers, he’ll return to a familiar environment. Before the deadline, Groulx spent much of the season with AHL Toronto, scoring an impressive 28 goals and 52 points in 59 games with a +7 rating. He returned to the Marlies for the 2026 Calder Cup playoffs, where he scored eight goals and 14 points in 23 games, helping the organization win a championship.
The Marlies are off to a 6-4-1-0 start to the 2026-27 campaign. They’re hovering around the middle of the pack offensively, so returning Groulx should provide the team with a boost.
