Maple Leafs Re-Sign Defenseman to 2-Year Contract Extension

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed defenseman Philippe Myers to a two-year contract extension worth $850,000 annually, starting in the 2025–26 season, the franchise announced on Friday.

The move reflects general manager Brad Treliving’s ongoing efforts to reshape the Leafs’ blue line following the additions of fellow defensemen Chris Tanev, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Dakota Mermis, and Jani Hakanpaa during the last offseason.

Myers, 27, joined Toronto on a one-year, $775,000 deal in July as a low-profile signing with low chances at cracking the opening-night roster, let alone making the impact he's caused through the first third of the season.

The defenseman has appeared in 11 games this season and although he's not produced a lot of points (just two, both on assists) he's become a minute-eater logging 17:07 of average ice time and showcasing physicality and good puck handling.

Undrafted and with prior stints in Philadelphia, Nashville, and Tampa Bay, Myers’ journey to a contending Toronto team was far from conventional.

“It’s been a frustrating past couple of years for me,” Myers said in October, per The Athletic. “But I never stopped believing.”

This season, new Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube has paired Myers with Morgan Rielly in the second line in what has been a surprisingly solid defensive couple.

With this extension, Myers secured his place in Toronto for the next two seasons after this one is over, assuming he completes his current and upcoming deal with the Leafs.

The most games Myers has appeared in a single season is 50 when he did it with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2020, the franchise he spent the most time with logging minutes in 115 different matchups.
