The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially announced a two-year contract extension for defenseman Philippe Myers, carrying an average annual value of $850,000. This deal will add to the team’s blue-line depth and avoid letting Myers become an unrestricted free agent. He has two assists in 11 games this season.
Myers, 27, has averaged 17:08 of ice time in the few games he’s played this season. But he’s growing into his role and is playing a lot more than he’s sitting. The 6-foot-5, 219-pound defenseman has steadily earned more playing time since December, featuring in 10 of Toronto’s last 16 games. He also played a key role in the Leafs’ recent back-to-back victories against the New York Islanders.
Myers entered the NHL with the Philadelphia Flyers, signing an entry-level contract in 2015. He later played for the Tampa Bay Lightning before joining Toronto as a free agent on July 2, 2024. In 169 career NHL games, Myers has eight goals and 30 assists for 38 points.
Myers also earned silver medals at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2019 IIHF World Championship with Team Canada.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman noted that getting Myers’ signed to an $850,000 cap hit was a smart move for the Maple Leafs. Given his recent performances and skill set (including his size), he could be an everyday player with a substantial upside.
Myers is finding his way with the Leafs and has been a good fill-in while the team has dealt with injuries. It will be interesting to see how quickly he can become more than an extra on this roster. If and when the Maple Leafs make the playoffs, he’ll be a good depth piece.
