TORONTO — Although every team in the NHL is participating in the series, the Toronto Maple Leafs found a way to tap into their rich history for the unveiling of the Hometown Remix jersey. Toronto held an event at Sonic Boom, a legendary record store on Spadina Avenue, for a meet-and-greet with fans, unveiling the new uniform. Wendel Clark and Darcy Tucker were in attendance, conducting their media availability behind a custom backdrop that celebrates the team’s history from 1927-onwards, the year the Toronto St. Patrick’s were formally renamed as the Toronto Maple Leafs.
“Does it look slimming?!” Clark bellows with a laugh in the Sonic Boom basement.
The former Maple Leafs captain is in a great mood, and is well aware of his place in franchise history. Clark, who was selected first overall in 1985, spoke about his connection to the fan base, two decades removed from the end of his playing career. He’s one of the all-time great Maple Leafs, but Clark told the media that his favourite moment was getting drafted, as it set the tone for the rest of tenure with the team.
“I think the jerseys are great,” Clark said. “They’ve got the detailing of the old Leaf, and that’s the focal point. I really like the off-white, just to show something a little different. But I think the jerseys have some great history. Makes you think of the Chief, George Armstrong and Johnny Bower when you get back there. Those are the guys that were ambassadors when I got here. Those are the last guys to win the Cup.”

“For us, to be able to put the jersey on is a special honour. To be able to still represent the club in this fashion, it’s truly an honour,” Tucker said. “You watch the team over the years, and the history of the organization, and to become part of it, it’s pretty special. It brings us back to an era that was really special for both of us.”

Every team in the NHL will be debuting their Hometown Remix jerseys, but as always, it’s different when it involves the Maple Leafs and their rich history, which almost doubles as a history of the league writ large. From Wendel Clark, to Auston Matthews, the history and heritage of the club is in good hands, 100 years after the Maple Leafs were formally named.
