Marc-Andre Fleury’s farewell exhibition with the Pittsburgh Penguins may not close the door on his playing career after all.
Fleury, 40, retired in May after 21 seasons and 575 career wins, ranking second all-time among goaltenders in NHL history. The veteran goalie signed a symbolic professional tryout deal with the Penguins earlier this month to suit up one last time, skating in practice and appearing in Saturday's preseason game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
On Friday, however, NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reported that teams will “100 percent” call Fleury and his agent, Allan Walsh, about a possible comeback in January.
Walsh fueled speculation by reposting LeBrun’s comment on X with the eyes emoji, a small gesture that immediately grabbed attention.

“I wanted to go back where it all began,” Fleury said about the reason behind making a brief comeback. “I see it as a wink to my past.”
LeBrun, however, remains adamant that the final chapter may not be written, making it very clear that more than one franchise will try to convince Fluery to make a comeback midway through the season.
"So I will just say this: I believe teams will try to convince Fleury out of retirement in January," LeBrun wrote on X. "I don’t know what he will say, but I am telling you teams will call, 100 percent."
Even in decline, Fleury showed flashes of competitiveness with Minnesota last season, finishing with 14 wins, a 2.93 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage.
Goaltending depth remains scarce around the NHL, and there will always be desperate teams exploring unconventional options midseason. Fleury’s status as a three-time Stanley Cup champion and respected veteran should keep him high on that list.
Following LeBrun's report, hockey fans jumped on the occasion to chime in and share his thoughts on the future of Fleury, whether that's staying retired or making a final comeback at some point this season.
From this video I think he’s pretty content with riding off into the sunset after tomorrow’s game. https://t.co/QHevBaPml7

"From this video, I think he’s pretty content with riding off into the sunset after tomorrow’s game," a user posted, quoting a clip showing Fleury practicing with the Penguins on Friday.
"Pitt needs a goalie now so if he was going to play he couldn't pick a better place," a Penguins fan posted, urging the team to sign Fleury to a regular deal.
"Longshot chance he could get lured back for a Team Canada Olympic roster spot? I'm not positive there are 3 conclusively better Canadian goalie options," another person said, bringing up the possibility of Fleury playing Olympic hockey next February.
"Why did he retire in the first place? Looks like he can still play," another user bluntly put it.
"Hard to believe he would but if he was going to I would think only Montreal and Pittsburgh would have a shot," one user said, doubting Fleury's possible comeback, but noting two likely destinations if it happens.
At the end of the day, one user put it best: "Fleury is a legend."
