The NHL’s closed media landscape is about to get a shake-up from two of its most outspoken stars in a rather surprising development.
Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk and his brother, Ottawa Senators captain Brady Tkachuk, announced they are launching a podcast called “Wingmen.”
The weekly show, announced Wednesday on ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show," makes the Tkachuks the first active NHL players to host their own podcast. Episodes will drop every Wednesday, with production handled by Wave Sports + Entertainment.
The brothers, both sidelined with long-term injuries, have made the most of their time away from the ice to step into a media space that has never been used by active NHL players before.

“I don’t know why they chose us to do it, but we’re so excited,” Matthew Tkachuk said during their segment on McAfee’s show. “We FaceTime pretty much daily, weekly. Now we’re getting paid to do it once a week. Are you kidding me?
“So it’s pretty exciting, and I’m just super excited to grow the game.”
Added Matthew: “Our dad always said, ‘You better leave the game in a better place than when you got here.’ There was a few f-bombs obviously thrown in there. But this is our best way of doing it.”
The show is being positioned as hockey’s answer to “New Heights,” the hit NFL podcast hosted by brothers Travis and Jason Kelce.
At the end of the day, the Tkachuk brothers are known as much for their play and edge on the ice as well as for their humor and their willingness to speak freely, which makes the “Wingmen” podcast look good on paper, offering fans a rare unfiltered look inside the NHL.
The first episode of “Wingmen” dropped Thursday.
