On Saturday, April 5, the San Jose Sharks hosted the Seattle Kraken for their fourth and final matchup of the season. With both teams eliminated from playoff contention, the two teams were vying for the season series. Although the Sharks won the first two games, the Kraken came back to win the third. Seattle won 5-1 against the Sharks this evening, resulting in a tied season series.
Five minutes into the first period, Josh Mahura sent the puck down the ice for Andre Burakovsky. He gained control of the puck and found Jared McCann skating up the center of the ice. Burakovsky sent a pass to McCann. With a shot, McCann put the Kraken on the board first.
Just four minutes later, McCann was back in the thick of the action after sending a pass to Adam Larsson up near the net. He spotted Burakovsky in front and passed to him. With a shot, Burakovksy extended the Kraken’s lead by two.
With six minutes left in the first period, Tyler Toffoli took a shot on net, which was blocked by Joey Daccord. Will Smith picked up the rebound and scored to cut the Kraken’s lead in half.
Seven minutes into the second period, the Sharks attempted to keep the puck in their offensive zone. Mario Ferarro’s stick broke, and Chandler Stephenson seized an opportunity. Stephenson took control of the puck and skated up the ice towards Alexandar Georgiev. He scored to give Seattle a two-goal lead once more.
Four minutes after Stephenson’s goal, Jaden Schwartz stole the puck away from Henry Thrun. He skated up to the net and with no one nearby, Schwartz took the shot to score the Kraken’s fourth goal of the night. After this goal, Georgiev was pulled, and Georgi Romanov entered the crease.
Just under two minutes to go in the second period, Shane Wright stole the puck off a missed pass from the Sharks. Wright started driving to the net with the puck but dropped it down for McCann. McCann took the shot to score his second goal of the night.
The third period was full of shot attempts and penalty minutes. Seattle took seven shots on the net while the Sharks took six. In the first half of the third, each team had six penalty minutes. Neither team scored on the extra-player advantages they received. As the game came to a close, things got chippy. William Eklund and Eeli Tolvanen each received five minutes for fighting, while Jamie Oleksiak, John Hayden, and Zack Ostapchuk each received a game misconduct. The Kraken finished out the game on the power play, but the score remained 5-1.
Both the Sharks and the Kraken will be back on the ice on Monday, April 7. The Kraken will continue their road trip in Los Angeles, where they will take on the Kings. The Sharks will host the Calgary Flames.
