When Mitch Marner decided to sign with the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this summer, the move sent shockwaves throughout the NHL. Marner leaves the Toronto Maple Leafs following multiple strong seasons, but the team just couldn't get over the hump.
Now with Vegas, Marner seemed to be very excited for multiple reasons. But one of those could be the toned-down environment compared to what he has been dealing with in Toronto.
When talking at Canada's National Teams Orientation Camp, Marner had some interesting comments about what he is excited about. The star mentioned a more peaceful way of life, sparking some eyebrows from those in Toronto.
“It’s going to be a new life. I’m really excited for it,” Marner said on Thursday from Hockey Canada's 2025 National Teams Orientation Camp. “Having the newborn now, my wife and I are very social, we like going out for dinners, we like being out with our friends, we like being around our teammates. It was tough to do that in Toronto.
“We’re looking for a new chapter, a new peaceful way of life sort of way, and we're going to enjoy watching our son grow up outside more, too. We’ll have to bring him back (to Toronto) a couple of times in the winter just so he can see the snow, but we’re looking forward to the relaxed side of things for sure.”
Compared to the pressure-cooker that is the Maple Leafs organization, the Golden Knights should be much calmer. Even with the team being in Las Vegas, it will be nothing compared to how Toronto was for Marner.
However, the expectations remain the same for this Golden Knights team and Marner in particular. With his new massive contract, Marner can't afford to come up short and is now expected to deliver a title to his new team.
