Carey Price's NHL career is over and has been for a number of years, but now fans are divided as reports reveal he could be traded by the Montreal Canadiens.
Carey Price has not played for the Montreal Canadiens since the 2021/22 campaign, a season in which he appeared in just 5 games, with the iconic goaltender officially retiring from the NHL.
However, he's still on the Canadiens books after they signed him to a eight-year, $84 million deal that will officially come to an end after the 2025/26 campaign, marking the end of, at the time, the most expensive goaltender contract ever (by AAV) in the NHL.
With one year remaining on his deal, there has been some speculation that Price's contract could be moved this summer, with a team like San Jose or Anaheim potentially using it to get themselves to the salary cap floor.
Those teams would need to pay just $800k of salary to price, but the $10.5 million AAV would allow them to significantly increase their cap to get to the floor without even having to add a player that will need to take the ice.
Unsurprisingly, Habs fans are split on this, with some showing frustration that life-long Canadien Price would be moved to another team before the official end of his contract.
Others however realize that this would just be a paper transaction, and when Price officially finishes his career at the end of his current contract, he'll be honoured by the team as he rightfully should.
Ultimately though, the benefits of moving Price to a team looking to get to the floor could be way too high for Montreal right now, so don't be shocked if we see the 37-year old officially moved before the end of this off-season.
