On Tuesday, the Toronto Maple Leafs overcame a three goal deficit in Boston for the first time since Nov. 7, 1963. It was a statement game for the Maple Leafs as a whole, but it was also the best offensive game for 30-year-old defenceman Morgan Rielly who has struggled with consistency on the offensive side of the puck at times this season.
Rielly opened the scoring for the Maple Leafs at 13:52 of the second period with a five-on-five goal from the point. At the time, it put the Maple Leafs within one goal as the one-time fifth overall pick in 2012 scored his seventh of the season.

hundred!
Congratulations to Morgan Rielly, who becomes only the third defenceman in @MapleLeafs history to reach 500 NHL career points with the club. pic.twitter.com/GDrFiMdUQl
The Maple Leafs scored three straight — including Rielly’s goal — to tie the game early in the third period with Rielly adding assists on both of the goals following his. He added a third assist on the overtime winner by Mitch Marner, but it was his first assist of the game — and 21st of the season — that notched his milestone 500th career point with the Maple Leafs and added him to an elite list of defensemen who have suited up in blue and white.
With his 500th point, Rielly joined Tomas Kaberle (520) and the late Börje Salming (768) as only the third defenceman in franchise history to reach the 500-point plateau. What’s better, is that Rielly reached the milestone in just his 849th career game for the Maple Leafs, giving him 29 games to notch another 18 points on his quest to reach Kaberle’s mark and second all-time on the franchise’s all-time list for defensive points.
Rielly has a chance to reach that mark this season as the Maple Leafs have 24 games left in their regular season. However, Rielly is producing at a clip that would leave him six points shy of Kaberle for second on the all-time list.
While some will consider this a down year for the long-time Maple Leafs defenceman, Rielly is still projected to finished the season with 42 points in 82 games as a 30-year-old on a team that has put a lot more focus on defending their own end this season under head coach Craig Berube.
With his four-point game on Tuesday, Rielly now sits with 502 career points in 849 career games. His 502 points has him 75th on the NHL’s all-time list for points by a defenceman and just two points shy of Brian Campbell for 74th on the all-time list.
On top of that, he sits 11th amongst active players on the all-time points list and could find himself within the top-10 by the end of the season if he can overtake former teammate Tyson Barrie (508).
As for his draft year, Rielly is third in career points from the 2012 NHL Draft behind only Tomas Hertl (532) and Filip Forsberg (658). The next closest defenceman on that list is Shayne Gostisbehere who has 398 career points in 669 career games.
As for the next milestone, Rielly made sure to start on that quickly with two more assists on Tuesday night following his 500-point milestone.
