The New Jersey Devils have begun the 2026-27 season on a high note, closing out October with a 9-5-0 record. After some initial struggles to find consistency, the club achieved a four-game win streak and has won five of its last six contests. The Devils’ success is a direct result of top-six chemistry, strong 5-on-5 metrics, and a surge in defensive efforts.
Though their special teams still need some work, the Devils have done a great job tilting the ice in their favor, generating scoring opportunities at an impressive rate. Their roster has only strengthened further with the addition of goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who led the team to victory twice on their most recent road trip.
As we head into November, it’s time to highlight which players went above and beyond last month. Here is this season’s first installment of the “Three Stars of the Month” series for The Hockey Writers.
It should come as no surprise that the captain kicks off our list as the third star of October. Nico Hischier remains an essential part of the Devils’ star-studded top six, and his impact has only been elevated with Timo Meier and newcomer Luke Evangelista on his wing.
Hischier continues to do it all for New Jersey, earning a reputation as one of the most versatile two-way centers in the league. Whether he’s scoring goals, acting as a defensive anchor, or manning the top power-play unit, he has the ability to shift the momentum of any given game.
He rounded out last month with two multi-point performances, beginning with two goals and an assist on Oct. 10 against the Vancouver Canucks. More recently, he scored twice in the Devils’ 5-1 win over the Dallas Stars, which included the game-winning goal in the second period.
So far this season, Hischier has notched seven goals and two assists, averaging 2.4 shots on goal per game. He ranks second in the NHL with 157 faceoff wins, while also leading the Devils with a 59.7 win percentage (FOW%).
This season has even marked a number of milestones for the Swiss native. He earned his 200th NHL goal against the Canucks, climbing the ranks of the franchise’s all-time greats. He currently sits at 206 career goals, passing Bobby Holik and Travis Zajac to claim third overall in Devils’ goalscoring.
In just 14 games, one thing has become clear: Luke Hughes has what it takes to be the Devils’ number one defenseman. He had plenty to prove after spending the offseason recovering from shoulder surgery, but now he’s on track for a breakout campaign.
Hughes scored his first of the season in the home opener against the Philadelphia Flyers. His goal late in the third tied the game at two, paving the way for a 3-2 overtime victory. He also contributed two goals in a 7-1 win over the New York Rangers. Already, he has five goals and two assists and is on pace for 30 goals, which would surpass the career-high he set in 2023-24 (9).
Currently, Hughes leads the club in ice time per game (23:57), but that’s only the beginning of his staggering impact. He’s been on the ice for 411 shot attempts, 23 goals, 214 scoring chances, and 84 high-danger scoring opportunities. What stands out early on is his discipline across all three zones, his puck transition, and unmatched speed.
His reach allows him to regain possession of the puck, cause turnovers, or set up his teammates in front of the net — but he can also make the highlight-worthy plays all on his own. A perfect example was his goal against the Stars on Tuesday night. Hughes weaved through the offensive zone, then fired a wrist shot from the circle. If the beginning of the season is any indication, fans can expect big things from him moving forward.
Rounding out our list is Arseny Gritsyuk, who has undeniably been one of the Devils’ most consistent players this season. He had a five-game goal streak that began against the Rangers, ending with an empty-net goal against the Los Angeles Kings.
He took Anthony Mantha’s spot on the top line with Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt, and has been an offensive catalyst for the team ever since. Across ten games, the Gritsyuk-Hughes-Bratt line has combined for eight goals and 58 shots. According to MoneyPuck, the trio ranks seventh in the NHL in expected goals (7.1) and sixth overall in shot attempts (136).
Gritsyuk has ten points in his last eight games, including two goals against the Vegas Golden Knights. First, he tied the game at two in the final minutes of the opening period, providing the momentum for three more unanswered goals. His second goal was a coast-to-coast effort, backhanding his own rebound into the net to make it a 4-2 game.
It’s Jack and Grits’ world. We’re just living in it. https://t.co/pscenbOJle

After such a strong start to the season, he’s clearly tapped into another level of his game. In only his second NHL campaign, Gritsyuk has carved a space for himself on the Devils’ top six — and he shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. As his game continues to evolve and existing top-line chemistry strengthens, it will be exciting to see what 2026-27 has in store for him.
The Devils have a busy schedule heading into November, and it all starts with a two-game homestand. They’ll also face the New York Islanders and the Washington Capitals once more, both of whom handed the club a loss last month. Things will wrap up with a back-to-back right after Thanksgiving, beginning with a matchup against the Calgary Flames, which also marks Simon Nemec’s first time returning to Prudential Center since being traded.
Can the Devils remain near the top of the Metropolitan Division and continue their winning ways?
