An NHL analyst ripped Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl after the Edmonton Oilers' collapse in Game Three of the Stanley Cup Finals.
The Edmonton Oilers were in Florida last night to face the Panthers in the third game of the Stanley Cup Finals. The stakes were high, with the series lead up for grabs, but the Panthers capitalized on their chances and imposed their style, taking the Oilers' confidence away from them one shift at a time.
The Oilers were no match against Paul Maurice's team and lost 6 to 1.
After the game, the Oilers were widely criticized for their performance. NHL analyst Craig Button blasted the team in post-game comments:
'You think about a Game 3 tied 1-1, it becomes a pivotal point in a series, and the Oilers were simply no-shows. They were no-shows. They were behind in the game. They never caught up to the game. At even strength, they were absolutely destroyed.'
Later, he ripped into Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who were both held pointless in the same game for the second time of the playoffs, for not being able to help the team at even strength:
'McDavid and Draisaitl five-on-five were nonfactors. The lack of discipline, the number of undisciplined penalties ... This team was simply not ready to play Game 3, and they got demolished. It wasn't close. It wasn't a contest.'
Listen to Button's full intervention here:
A lot of the credit goes to the Panthers, who did an outstanding job against them. They even managed to take McDavid out of the game momentarily with a massive hit, shaking not only the Oilers' captain's confidence, but also his team's.
With Game 4 set to go down Thursday, Kris Knoblauch and the Oilers will have to build their confidence back fast to avoid facing elimination in Edmonton in Game 5, next Saturday.
