In today’s NHL injury news, the Edmonton Oilers will be without Zach Hyman after the forward was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury, while the Washington Capitals could get goaltender Logan Thompson back in the lineup. The Vegas Golden Knights are evaluating Carter Hart after he was injured during a morning skate. Meanwhile, the Toronto Maple Leafs have provided updates on several injured players, including Kirill Marchenko. Finally, the Detroit Red Wings revealed why Dylan Larkin missed practice.
The Edmonton Oilers have placed Zach Hyman on injured reserve with a stiff neck after he was injured during Monday’s shootout loss to the Detroit Red Wings. Hyman took a hit from defenseman Andreas Englund and was forced to leave the game after striking the back of his head against the glass.
Head coach Mike Babcock said, “We’re just being extra cautious… Originally when you see it, you think maybe it’s a head thing and then you find out it’s a neck thing and that’s a real good thing for you.” Hyman will miss Wednesday’s game against the Calgary Flames.
Edmonton has some positive news: Jason Dickinson and Mattias Ekholm are both expected to return after missing games.
The Washington Capitals could have Logan Thompson back in the lineup Wednesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. The goaltender was activated from injured reserve Tuesday after missing Saturday’s overtime win against Buffalo with a lower-body injury. Thompson was the first goalie off the ice following Wednesday’s morning skate, suggesting he could be ready to return. If he doesn’t play against Philadelphia, Thursday’s matchup with Nashville is another possibility.
The Vegas Golden Knights are evaluating Carter Hart after the goaltender fell and appeared to injure himself during Tuesday’s morning skate.
Meanwhile, Carolina remains without Taylor Hall, who missed Tuesday’s win over Boston despite recently being activated from injured reserve. Hall is still considered week-to-week with an upper-body injury.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have provided several injury updates, with Kirill Marchenko and Nick Blankenburg both listed as week-to-week. Marchenko is dealing with a lower-body injury, while Blankenburg has an upper-body injury.
Chris Tanev, who has been working his way back from an upper-body injury, is considered day-to-day. The Maple Leafs have also recalled Dakota Joshua from his conditioning loan with the Toronto Marlies.
In Detroit, Dylan Larkin’s absence from practice was attributed to a maintenance day rather than an injury concern. However, Albert Johansson will miss Thursday’s game after suffering an injury in Calgary, with no timetable for his return yet.
Head coach Todd McLellan also indicated that forwards Marco Kasper and Mason Appleton are probably about two weeks away from returning.
The Dallas Stars will be without defenseman Kyle Capobianco for at least a week after he sustained a lower-body injury during Tuesday’s loss to the New Jersey Devils. Dallas could get forward Sam Steel back Thursday against Montreal after he missed two games with an undisclosed injury. David Perron, meanwhile, is not yet ready to make his season debut after signing a one-year contract earlier this month.
The Pittsburgh Penguins received encouraging news as rookie Ben Kindel returned to practice Tuesday for the first time since suffering a medical episode on the team plane on Oct. 20. Evgeni Malkin, who is dealing with an illness, and Egor Chinakhov, who has a lower-body injury, also missed Pittsburgh’s most recent game. Defenseman Elmer Soderblom remains day to day with an upper-body injury after missing another practice Wednesday.
