NHL insider calls this AWESOME Dallas Stars' prospect the next Logan Stankoven

The Dallas Stars may have landed another late-round gem in Cameron Schmidt, drawing comparisons to Logan Stankoven.

The Dallas Stars entered the 2025 NHL Draft without a pick in the first two rounds. That didn't stop them from making noise in the third.

With the 94th overall selection, Dallas chose Cameron Schmidt, a 5-foot-7 forward from the WHL's Vancouver Giants.

Despite his size, Schmidt has been one of junior hockey's most dangerous scorers over the last two seasons, recording 71 goals and 63 assists. His draft stock dropped mainly because of his height, but talent evaluators believe his skill level is well above his draft position.

It's no surprise that some fans, and analysts, are already making comparisons to Logan Stankoven.

Like Schmidt, Stankoven entered the league doubted for his stature but quickly proved he could make an impact.

"The Stars have time to develop him, let's give him a shot,"
team representatives told NHL.com after the pick.

Cameron Schmidt's potential path with the Dallas Stars and similarities to Logan Stankoven

Right now, the Stars don't need to rush Schmidt into the NHL. With their current Stanley Cup contention window and depth in the system, including prospects Arttu Hyry and Emil Hemming, the organization can let him develop at his own pace.

Schmidt's scoring touch and work ethic have earned him the label of "first-round talent" from some draft analysts.

As Blackout Dallas reported:

"If developed properly, Schmidt could be the second coming of Stankoven in Dallas."

I think the biggest key will be how he adjusts to playing against bigger, faster defenders at the pro level. If he thrives in that transition, the Stars could be looking at one of the biggest steals of the 2025 draft class.
