As the new NHL season comes closer to starting up, the Los Angeles Kings are dealing with contract extension talks with star Adrian Kempe. Kempe has one more season left on his current deal, and he is scheduled to make $5.5 million this coming year.

The 29-year-old wing has been looking for a new contract from Los Angeles, and it now seems that the two sides may start to discuss terms. Los Angeles has been careful with contracts this offseason, likely with the understanding that this could be coming about.

Adrian Kempe Extension Rumors

According to NHL insider David Pagnotta, the two sides are expected to start negotiations back up very soon. The hope is that Kempe and the Kings can come to an agreement before the new year starts to avoid any unnecessary distractions lingering into the season.

The biggest question around Kempe is how much money he would receive from the Kings. Los Angeles will likely have to open up the checkbook to keep him in town, and reportedly, that may happen.

Pagnotta also reported that he believes the deal for Kempe will come in around $10 or $11 million per season. Kempe has been a key player for the Kings over the last few seasons.

Last season with Los Angeles, Kempe posted 35 goals and 38 assists on the year. Kempe has put up at least 67 points in three straight seasons, and he seems to be getting better each year.

Los Angeles can't afford to lose him in free agency, so the front office will likely need to pay him what he wants. As the Kings look to get back into the Stanley Cup title chase, Kempe could be a real difference-maker on the ice for the team.
