NHL insider Jeff Marek believes the Oilers could look to acquire Penguins' Tristan Jarry, but it would require Pittsburgh to retain some of his salary.
After another heartbreaking Stanley Cup Final loss to the Florida Panthers, the Edmonton Oilers enter the off-season with serious questions, most notably between the crease.
Goaltending was a huge weak spot in the playoffs. Stuart Skinner put up a .889 save percentage and gave up five or more goals in five games.
Calvin Pickard wasn't substantially better, putting up a .886 save percentage and only three starts with a .900 mark or higher. The inconsistency in the pipes was impossible to ignore. The Oilers must improve. So do the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Tristan Jarry's Penguin days may be over. The 30-year-old goalie finished out the 2024-25 campaign with a 16-12-6 mark and an unimpressive .893 save rate.
With young goaltenders making their way up the Penguins' pipeline, it would not be out of the question for GM Kyle Dubas to put him on the trade market. That is where Edmonton could come into the mix.
NHL insider Jeff Marek spoke recently about whether Edmonton GM Stan Bowman is looking for a goalie replacement, and that Tristan Jarry's a name to consider. But it'd be difficult to make the numbers add up.
Jarry still has three years remaining on his contract at $5.375 million annually, a premium price for a goalie who went through a rough year.
But Jeff Marek also said Pittsburgh has room under the cap to absorb salary, and it would definitely require some retention to make a deal work.
'I don't how Bowman's gonna do this; I've wondered...about someone like Tristan Jarry; it would certainly take some retention on the Pittsburgh side of things.'- Jeff Marek
As the NHL cap increases and the cost of quality goaltenders increases, Jarry's deal might not be as much of an issue as it appears to be, at least if he returns to playing at least at an average level.
If the Penguins are in the mood to absorb some salary, the Oilers can get their upgrade they so badly need.
