The free agency sweepstakes to land Toronto Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner are expected to be wild. Marner is suspected to land a massive contract this summer, and a bidding war could ensue between interested teams.
But due to the high asking price that he is likely to command, the number of teams that have serious interest could be small. However, Marner is a true game-changer for potential teams, and he could alter the trajectory of a franchise.
There have been plenty of teams linked to the star free agent already, but there may be one not being talked about enough. That would be the Boston Bruins, who are in line to make a splash this summer.
And according to James Mirtle of The Athletic, the Bruins can't be ruled out in the chase to land Marner.
"Between David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy and Jeremy Swayman, they have a lot of strong pieces in place, so scorched earth doesn’t seem like the way to go. It would be a bit of a heel turn for Marner, given they’re such a big rival in the division, but I don’t think we can rule it out entirely just on that basis. They certainly have the cap room after their big sell-off before the deadline.", Mirtle wrote.
Marner landing in Boston would be a knife to the chest of Toronto fans, but it could be a strong destination for the star forward. Boston has a few young players who could interest Marner for the long haul, and the Bruins could retool things quickly.
The Bruins have a need to turn things around, and adding a player like Marner would enhance the rebuild. The biggest question will be whether Boston is willing to pay what it takes, but if they are, don't sleep on the Bruins to come away with the most coveted free agent of the offseason.
