According to the report, the National Hockey League board of governors unanimously voted to approve the new advertisement policy. ESPN's Greg Wyshynski adds that all 32 teams were previously surveyed and the majority ruled in favor of having the ads on sweaters.
The NHL started allowing teams to sell ad space on their helmets last season. Commissioner Gary Bettman said the campaign allowed teams to retain over $100 million during the truncated 2020-21 season.
Wyshynski points out teams will likely get to choose exactly where on their sweaters the ads will go based on each club's individual jersey design.
While this is the first time advertisements will be posted on NHL game-worn jerseys, it isn't the first time we have seen them in the wide world of hockey. NHL practice jerseys have had ads for over a decade, while other North American leagues such as the AHL and NWHL have long featured advertisements on their fronts.
