NHL Rumors: Rangers, Flyers, Sabres, Tavares, Maple Leafs

In today’s NHL rumors rundown, the New York Rangers signed NCAA talent Gabe Perreault. He’s already at practice with the team. Will he play this week? Meanwhile, are the Philadelphia Flyers the team most likely to submit an offer sheet to an RFA this summer? Is John Tavares going to get $6 million per season from the Toronto Maple Leafs? Finally, the NHL and Rogers have come to terms on a new long-term television rights contract.

Gabe Perreault to Debut for the Rangers

The Rangers wasted no time bringing top prospect Gabe Perreault to New York. After his season with Boston College ended, he was quickly on the ice with the Rangers at practice on Tuesday, wearing No. 94 like his father Yanic Perreault used to do. The Rangers will take on the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday, and there is some thought that Perreault will be in the lineup.

Perreault finished his NCAA career with 108 points in 73 games. A former US National Team Development Program record-setter, he’s projected as a skilled, top-six playmaker with PP1 upside. “He’s a stud,” said ex-linemate Will Smith. “Best vision I’ve ever played with.”

Perreault was on the second line at practice with Alexis Lafrenière and JT Miller.

Could the Flyers Be the Team To Watch Regarding an Offer Sheet?

On 32 Thoughts, the Flyers were named as a team that could use offer sheets this summer. “Philly has in 2026, they have their 1st, they have their 2nd, they have their 3rd, they have their 4th, they have seven draft picks in the first two rounds this year…” he said. Friedman added, “Teams are starting to look around and saying, is that going to be the offer sheet team this year?”

Some interesting forwards are RFAs. Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli and Carter Hutton discussed which player could be an offer sheet target. Seravalli believes that JJ Peterka of the Buffalo Sabres would be a prime candidate. The 23-year-old forward is completing a three-year entry-level contract and has 29 goals and 59 points in 68 games this season.

Tavares Worth $6 Million per Season?

As per Darren Dreger on FirstUp 1050, it is clear the Maple Leafs will not be giving John Tavares an $11 million AAV contract again. There is some thought that they are looking at trying to cut his salary in half. Toronto wants to go as high as the $6-7 million range.

To get the AAV where they want it, speculation is that the Leafs could go as long as a four- or five-year term and may potentially look at deferring money. He wants to stay in Toronto and finish his career with the Leafs, but there is concern about where he’ll slot in next season and how much to pay someone who might wind up being the third-line center.

The rising salary cap gives the Leafs more flexibility, but if his asking price isn’t manageable for Brad Treliving, the Leafs are willing to move on.

NHL and Rogers Finalize New Deal

The NHL and Rogers have agreed to a new, 12-year Canadian TV deal that will pay the league about $7.7 billion USD ($11 billion CAD). Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico broke the news on Monday.

The agreement would kick in for the 2026-27 season, and Sportico notes that the average yearly rate is worth more than twice as much as that of the previous deal.
