Though there isn’t a Penticton Young Stars Classic this year, we’ll still be able to watch future Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames square off in a two-game, home-and-home rookie game series.

According to Jason Gregor, the Oilers will host the Flames in Edmonton on Friday, September 12, and then the two teams will play again in Calgary on Sunday, September 14. A few days later, on Wednesday, September 17, the Oilers will open training camp for the 2025-26 NHL season.

Leading the way for the Oilers will be top prospect Matthew Savoie, who’s coming into training camp vying for a position in Edmonton’s top-six forward gorup alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. The ninth overall pick from the 2022 draft scored 54 points in 66 games for the Bakersfield Condors in his first full professional season last year.

This home-and-home with Calgary will be the first opportunity to see a handful of young players suit up for the Oilers, including reigning Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard, who Edmonton acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier this summer. After scoring 52 points in 37 games for Michigan State University last season, the winger is looking to jump to the big-league level this fall.

Edmonton’s top two selections from the 2025 draft, Tommy Lafreniere and David Lewandowski, will also be among the players representing the Oilers for the first time in this Junior Battle of Alberta. Lafreniere scored 56 points in 68 games for the Kamloops Blazers last season, while Lewandowski put up 39 points in 52 games for the Saskatoon Blades in his first season playing in North America.

The Oilers will also open their pre-season against the Flames on Sunday, September 21, with split-squad games in Calgary and Edmonton.
