Oilers Claim Alec Regula Off of Waivers from the Boston Bruins

Regula, 24, has yet to play this season due to a knee injury sustained over the offseason. This injury kept him out of Boston’s training camp and preseason, leading to his non-roster status when the regular season began. In order to get him back on the ice in Providence, the waiver process was necessary.

After spending last season in the minors, Regula, acquired from Chicago in the 2023 Taylor Hall/Nick Foligno trade, posted impressive AHL numbers, including a +36 rating and 26 points in 55 games. While he has made 22 NHL appearances, Regula hasn’t yet made a significant impact at that level. With other players like Ian Mitchell ahead of him, his NHL future was uncertain in Boston.

Bob Stauffer of Oilers Now writes: “Regula is a rangy, right-shot D who has reach and play-making ability. Coming off a knee injury. Previously played 22 games for Chicago. Had 4-22-26/55GP/+36 with Providence (AHL) last season.”

It’s not clear what the Oilers intend to do with the player, but the assumption is that he’ll not be an the main roster. However, this could mean that winning a spot in Edmonton just became a lot more difficult for someone like Travis Dermott.
