We had been hearing rumblings over the past couple weeks of changes to the Edmonton Oilers’ assistant coaches. The key name in that was Glen Gulutzan. Those rumours have now been made official as the (now former) assistant coach has been named head coach of the Dallas Stars.
This will be the second time that Gulutzan is the head coach of the Stars, he was previous in this role for two seasons, 2011–12 and 2012–13 in which the Stars missed the playoffs both years.

Gulutzan had spent seven seasons with the Oilers, all as an assistant coach. He joined the organization for the 2018–19 season. In recent years, since he has been in charge of the powerplay, the team has turned that into their specialty, regularly dominating the league with the man advantage. Gulutzan had received props from around the league for his work Edmonton’s powerplay.
In his seven seasons with the Oilers, the team made the playoffs six times, including the Stanley Cup Finals in the past two consecutive seasons. Gulutzan was a part of the coaching staff of five different coaches, beginning with Todd McLellan, and staying during the tenures of Ken Hitchcock, Dave Tippett, Jay Woodcroft, and now Kris Knoblauch.
