Oilers team President Jeff Jackson released a statement regarding how negotiations are going with Connor McDavid, and it appears to be positive.
The Edmonton Oilers' priorities are as obvious as the daylight, CEO of Hockey Operations Jeff Jackson believes.
Win the sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history, just four wins away, and then sign a long-term extension with captain Connor McDavid to ensure they retain him and Leon Draisaitl at the forefront of future playoff pushes.
'We're not into it yet, but I think once the season's over, if it goes any way, the way it did last year, now they we were fortunate to make it to the Final, then all of a sudden you're into the end of June, you're into the draft, you're into free agency. But yes, priority No. 1 would be to talk to Connor and his agents. And ya, it's on everybody's radar for sure. But we're just leaving it for the time being as long as we're still playing. After that, ya.'- Jeff Jackson
McDavid has once more demonstrated irreplaceable, leading the playoffs in points with 26 (six goals, 20 assists) in 16 games.
His breakaway goal in Game 5 against the Dallas Stars secured a 6-3 win and brought Edmonton back to the Stanley Cup Final, where they'll face the same Florida Panthers who bested them in seven games a year ago. Game 1 is on Wednesday at Rogers Place.
As the franchise's image and a force behind consecutive Final appearances, McDavid's future is enormous. He enters the final season of his eight-year, $100 million contract in 2025-26 and can sign an extension starting July 1.
'Look, Connor knows what he means to this organization and the city of Edmonton,' Jackson said. 'And this organization and the city certainly know what Connor means to them. We're very cognizant of that.'- Jeff Jackson
The Oilers anticipate that he will duplicate what Draisaitl did in September, inking an eight-year, $112 million pact.
Will a Stanley Cup victory persuade McDavid to stick around? Will team President Jeff Jackson be able to convince him that Edmonton remains the destination to win? Or will McDavid throw free agency into the mix next summer?
One thing is certain: wherever he ends up, he's going to become the NHL's highest-paid player.
