The first Montreal Canadiens prospect to crack my top 10 list is forward Logan Sawyer. Yesterday, I talked about my honourable mentions who deserved recognition but just missed out on the list, and today the list officially starts with the sophomore forward who plays for the Providence College Friars. Sawyer cracks my list for the first time, as he was unranked during the summer. A huge reason for this is the progression that has been seen in his game so far this season.
#GoHabsGo prospect Logan Sawyer scored his 12th of the season and is now on 23 points in 26 games.

In 26 games this year for Providence College, Sawyer has scored 12 goals and 23 points, which puts him in a tie for the team lead alongside 2025 Anaheim Ducks first-round pick Roger McQueen in scoring. Meanwhile, Sawyer’s 12 goals are the most on his team. The fact that he leads his team in goals and points is primarily thanks to registering a goal and an assist in both his last 2 matchups. It seems like the 19-year-old left wing who was 78th overall in 2024 is progressing more and more as the season goes on, which is why he has broken into the Habs’ top 10 prospects.
Sawyer may not be as flashy or followed as closely as the other guys that will be shown higher on the list, but what he does have is good projectability in his overall game. The Habs prospect is a solid 2-way player that makes good reads at both ends of the ice. He likely projects as a bottom-six forward at the pro level that can kill penalties and provide the occasional offence for his team. Not to mention, he has a clutch ability to score big goals in College Hockey so far.

The best way to describe Sawyer is that he’s a 2-way workhorse that should eventually get a chance to be an NHLer one day after he is done at Providence College. Sawyer will likely play at least another year in the NCAA after this year before he turns pro, as, unlike someone like Michael Hage at Michigan, he isn’t close to NHL ready. Another year in college should allow Sawyer to be a top player at Providence again before taking the jump to the Rocket after the 2026-27 season.
The one issue that is hurting Sawyer from being higher on this list is that the Canadiens already have similar players like Jake Evans and Owen Beck that are higher up in the team’s system. Yes, these two players are centres, but the way they play the game is very similar to Sawyer. They are all energy players who may not be the most physical, but their overall smarts allow them to be good penalty killers.

At the same time, teams can always use hard workers like that in their bottom six to give up the team’s energy during rough patches. Sawyer is the type of player that would be hard on the forecheck, but his skillset doesn’t really bring anything unique to the table that nobody else on the Canadiens has. With that being said, it’s hard to place him above someone like Florian Xhekaj, who is looking like he will also be a good 4th-line player but also brings an intimidation factor to the table, which makes him a more intriguing prospect than Sawyer. The thing that could work in Sawyer’s favour against Xhekaj is that he likely has more pure skill and offence that he can bring to the next level. Only time will tell if that part of his game translates to the next level.
If Sawyer continues to progress over the next year, there is the possibility that he could move up the Habs prospects list, but as of now it seems safe to say that with his projectability and skill set, he seems best suited at the 10 position.
