The Florida Panthers don’t like the Edmonton Oilers. They’ve made that clear during the celebrations for their second consecutive Stanley Cup wins over the Oilers.
A video of Panthers players surfaced online, notably Matt Tkachuk leading a “F*** McDavid” chant inside a club. Another video shows Tkachuk grabbing a microphone and loudly asking the crowd, “Connor McDavid, who?” There were also F-bombs directed towards the Oilers from the Panthers, which started with AJ Greer yelling from a balcony, “F*** the Oilers.”
Elliotte Friedman speculated on 32 Thoughts the Podcast that this bitterness starts with Matthew Tkachuk and his time with the Calgary Flames, mentioning how Tkachuk has intensely disliked the Oilers ever since he featured in the Battle of Alberta.
“I think the rivalry between Tkachuk and the Oilers is very real, very real. And it goes back to that Battle of Alberta, that playoff series where the Oilers won in five games.
But in particular, when Calgary lost to Edmonton in that playoff Battle of Alberta, I know that the Oilers felt that they broke the Flames, they ended that group. That team was pretty much broken up after that.
Some of the Flames told me that they knew the Oilers felt that way. And one of the Flames players from that team told me that the worst thing about it is ‘We have to eat it cause they’re right, they beat us so badly that they were never the same team again.’
So, I think the feelings between Tkachuk and those Oilers are very real, and some of the other players who were on that Flames team, and those Oilers are very real.”
Another thing the Panthers have done is play ‘Pink Ponky Club’ by Chappell Roan when celebrating with the Cup. A little bit of a dig at the Oilers, who were known to use that as their win song throughout the 2025 playoffs. It was a song that caught fire amongst Oilers fans and was played everywhere around Edmonton since April.
Although the Oilers do not own the song, it has become a secondary victory anthem alongside ‘La Bamba.’ For the Panthers to now play it during their celebrations almost seems like a taunt directed at the Oilers.
For Matthew Tkachuk and Panthers fans, the dislike for Connor McDavid runs deep, stemming not only from events in 2022 but also from McDavid’s iconic moment this past February. He scored the overtime winner for Canada against the United States in the 4 Nations Final. Watching that moment likely intensified Tkachuk’s animosity toward the Oilers captain even further, as did the same for Panthers fans, who were likely rooting for the States.
With all the viral videos of the Florida Panthers celebrating their Stanley Cup victory, it might be wise for Oilers fans to take a break from social media as they cope with another heartbreaking end to the season.
