Paul Bissonette Grades Maple Leafs' Trade Deadline Moves

Paul Bissonnette believes the Toronto Maple Leafs made all the right moves at the trade deadline.

Toronto landed a "shocked" Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins in a deal that brought in a reliable right-shot defenseman with extensive playoff experience.

The Maple Leafs also acquired caught-off-guard Scott Laughton from the Philadelphia Flyers, adding crucial depth at the center position with Toronto using him in their third forward line.

The former NHL player and current TNT analyst graded the team’s acquisitions an “A” while praising general manager Brad Treliving’s approach during Tuesday's episode of the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast.

“It went from a B-plus to an A,” Bissonnette said. “They addressed their needs, ultimately, a grade A for Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs for solidifying that playoff roster.”

Carlo led the Bruins in blocked shots (119) before the trade and already has 128 on the season.

“I had no idea they were even in the realm of getting (Carlo),” Bissonnette said. “I didn’t even know that he was available. Really, very happy. Very serviceable defenseman on the right side for Boston for a long time. Obviously, has tons of playoff experience.”

Laughton's strong two-way play and aggressive forechecking made him a key addition ahead of the playoffs.

Toronto preferred Laughton over a more prominent name like St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn, and with Philadelphia retaining half his salary, the Leafs were able to fit him under the cap.

“I was hoping for Brayden Schenn; love Scott Laughton, he’s a great guy," Bissonnette said. "I didn’t know that they were getting 50% retained, and then last minute, they get Carlo, which also 15% retained, and he’s got two more years left on his deal.”

Laughton has recorded 11 goals and 27 points in 64 games this season. Carlo, meanwhile, has 10 points in 67 games.

The Maple Leafs, however, have struggled since the deadline going 0-3-1 in the four games following it and dropping to third in the Atlantic Division standings with a 39-24-3 record and 81 points in 66 games.
