The Pittsburgh Penguins have two players in Team Canada’s summer showcase camp. 2023 first-rounder Brayden Yager played on the 2023 team, scoring five points in what became an early exit in the quarterfinal. Still, in a sign of a deepening prospect pool, a second Penguins prospect got the call to participate in the summer showcase, which runs from July 28 to Aug. 3 in
Penguins second-round pick (46th overall) Tanner Howe was one of 24 forwards who will begin the tryout process to represent Canada in the 2025 World Junior Championships, which will be held in Ottawa.
Howe, 18, signed his entry-level contract shortly after the Penguins selected him. The forward brings a unique blend of sandpaper, agitation, and offensive ability. His game certainly resembles Boston Bruins’ high-scoring pest Brad Marchand.
Howe was Connor Bedard’s linemate with the Regina Pats and managed to maintain his offensive pace without Bedard, who was drafted first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in 2023. Last season, Howe still scored 28 goals and 77 points in 68 games.
The 5-foot-10, 182-pound left wing also left a good impression at the recent Penguins Development Camp, scoring a pair of goals near the net. The camp will include 38 players who were selected in the NHL Draft and will begin to form Team Canada.
Here is the full camp roster. The team will be coached by Dave Cameron with former Penguins coach Mike Johnston serving as an assistant.
