Penguins vs. Senators: Riding Hot Hands

The Pittsburgh Penguins stuck to it and earned two points against a difficult Carolina Hurricanes team. Backup goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic stole the show against his former team, making 17 saves and allowing just one goal. With just one game left before their winter holiday break, the Penguins travel north of the border for a battle with the Ottawa Senators. Here's what to watch for between the Pens and Sens.

1. Have to Beat Atlantic Division

The Atlantic Division has been the thorn in the side of the Penguins this season. While they haven't impressed in their own division, going just 3-3-2 so far, they've faired far worse against the Atlantic, with a 4-6 record. The Eastern Conference in jam-packed with talent in both divisions, and the Penguins need to get their divisional records above .500 if they want to jump back into playoff contention.  

2. Chychrun Thriving in Ottawa

Last season, the Penguins were rumored to be heavily pursuing defenseman Jakob Chychrun. He ultimately ended up in Ottawa, netting Arizona a hefty return and giving the Sens a number one pairing defender. His first full season as a Senator has made the trade seem like a steal, as he's put up 22 points already and is averaging nearly 23 minutes of ice time per game. He's an all situation defender and will likely be a huge difference maker in this matchup. 

3. Starter Battle in Pittsburgh?

The Penguins have a pleasant problem on their hands after an impressive run of games from Nedeljkovic. Since starter Tristan Jarry was pulled in Toronto, the Pens have started Ned in back-to-back games and earned wins in both. The loss against the Maple Leafs was a complete team failure and not indicative of Jarry's performance this season, but it's clear that head coach Mike Sullivan is willing to ride the hot goaltender to collect points. If Ned keeps winning, he may keep earning more starts for the Penguins and force Jarry into a battle for number one position.
